A few weeks ago many in the Telecom Industry came to rally in Toronto denouncing the entrance of Verizon a Foreign Telecom giant into the Canadian Market. Unions rallying with the support of the Big (3) Rogers, Bell and Telus were claiming that many jobs would be lost and their pensions would be in jeopardy.
Then I came across an Article while I was in Halifax written by Gail Lethbridge a freelance writer, read in The Chronicle Herald, “spare us the crocodile tears, Canadian Telcos” as she goes on to explain how the fear mongering toward the Canadian public is simply self serving. For upwards of 30 years and with the advantage of restrictions to foreign ownership, rather than create healthy competition in the Canadian Market, the public who actually OWN the airwaves are being held hostage by these colluding corporate thugs who have found ways to gouge, cheat and rob all Canadians. The truth is that Canadians have paid the highest Cell phone rates in the world and steadily they produced advertising denying and distorting the facts. The word ‘Roaming Charges’ does it hit a nerve? Some individuals have had to pay thousands extra until the government, through legislation, limited the amounts anyone could be charged. How many times did the amount you thought you owed surprisingly jump one month over another? What is wrong with healthy competition? Why do these Oligarchs think they have an entitlement over the Canadian market place? The good news is the Government is trying to create more competition by opening up the spectrum of radio frequencies to foreign owners.
The bad news is that Verizon decided to avoid confrontation for the time being. Maybe if you call and complain you might be able to speak to a person at a call center abroad like India, oh aren’t they taking the job of a Canadian simply because the Oligarchs can make more profit?
The sheep continue to be led by the blind.
