Unfortunately time flies, case in point was this past weekend as I attended my aunt and uncles 50th Wedding Anniversary. It was a time of celebration as well as reflection of the achievements they made as a family. Maintaining a family of my own I find that we become easily distracted from one another as everyone strives to find themselves; be it work, school or home making. Ultimately we all grow up striving to be a reflection of the heritage we are immersed in. It was a wonderful day and the setting was perfect, with good food, laughs, and entertainment. Reminiscing with my many cousins I reflected on my upbringing. Our parents aren’t spring chickens anymore and the many departed we will always be grateful to have called family. As the circle of life continues the young generation eclipses the older generation yet it is the older generation for which the younger will never hold a candle to. In some ways their courage to come to a new world without even knowing the language or customs, enabled them to concentrate on their families. Sacrifice was the only word in their vocabulary and if they had any intention to better themselves through formal education, it was just a pipe dream; Survival was reality. Success equates, hard work, as is the norm for many immigrant families even today. The happiest moments were always around the dinner table, regardless where you were, when your father whistled or your mother called, you had to drop everything you were doing and be present at that table…or else! Life is such, that for many we work intending to live forever. Media also is geared to sell us the fountain of youth but fail to realize that age and sickness may hinder us from participating in certain activities in our golden years. This is why it is important to do the things that are important to you today because tomorrow may never come. There is that old saying, ‘it is easier to choose your friends not your family` but it is blood that is thicker than water. Therefore keep the peace and reap the rewards of a family many would be envious and honoured to have.
I think I love you!
