In early March our family had a house fire, no one was injured but we have been temporarily displaced, settling for a two bedroom condo in the Yonge and Eglinton area. Instantly my testosterone levels were heightened and my blood pressure has gone parabolic, pretending to be young and eligible, some people asked, “where did I get that Pogo stick?” The sights, the sounds and all the fast food, are killing me! It isn’t the home we are accustomed to but nevertheless it is our temporary residence. Nothing seems normal these days as I have been in a haze for the last six months. If it’s not about work, it’s about family/relationship or the house. Our lives are upside down and tensions are rising.

But the biggest adjustment has been getting on the Subway from Eglinton station to go to Queen and visa versa coming home. No longer is a seat available yet the ride is like the Burt Reynolds movie, “The Longest Yard”; the train moves at a snails pace, you hope to get to your destination on time while being packed like a sardine in a tin can. God forbid if there is a delay. If someone activates the passenger assistance alarm, everyone is inconvenienced until the emergency teams respond. I would strongly suggest that the TTC designate areas on the platforms to remove ill passengers from the train by qualified employees, trained in first aid and move on. Further the idea of building relief lines is great but with the new tunnelling technology wouldn’t it be easier to build an express line with limited number of stops and charge a premium for the quicker service running parallel under the existing system? I am convinced it could be cheaper in the long run and accommodating the mandate of the Province that requires new Urban development to be concentrated on existing corridor lines thus accommodating the 150,000 new residents/year  Toronto will see over the next 10 years. Think outside the box and great things will happen!
