In Toronto there has been an on going debate in regard to public transportation to either build subways or fund multi commuter lines (LRT). The later would essentially tear up existing streets for the dedication to public transit. The province is willing to commit billions of tax payer dollars for the mega work project yet it is this short sightedness that continues to indebt a province which was once the economic engine of Canada. Rather than model our city to world class cities like New York, England, Tokyo…etc, the politicians continue to bicker as paid professionals have little leeway to make decisions which would deliver a transportation system that is uniform and interlinked across the city. In my personal opinion I would prefer subways, as the technology is much improved to burrow beneath the existing roadways without causing mass disruptions. We just need to look at St. Clair Avenue to make my point. The roads are needed for cars until public transportation becomes more reliable. I was once standing at Dufferin and St. Clair looking to head north. There were three buses in a row going south and the foreman who was probably earning $100K/year was drinking coffee while ladies with infants and strollers struggled to get on and off the buses. Recently I was in the subway @ Eglinton Ave W. when two young thugs entered the car I was in. They looked a little rough as I kept to myself. As the doors were about to close one of the boys threw his empty bottle on to the platform. What a bone headed juvenile move. I thought to myself why couldn’t he simply wait to throw it away? I contemplated getting up to talk to him and even looked up for the emergency strips in the event I did the courageous thing and potentially got stabbed for actually caring enough. Some things aren’t worth getting killed over but I still prefer Subways, even if they considered building one station at a time rather than LRT’s that will cost more in the long run. It’s been thirty years we finally need a resolution. Sincerely-Philip Magnoli, my friends call me Don Filippo -Don’t Forgetta About Me!
