Good morning,
These past many months my siblings and I have had to take responsibility like many others, to cater to the needs of elderly parents. The Circle of Life is such that when one is born, he/she needs to be nurtured. Ultimately, the environment one grows in will determine the quality of character developed.
Many a time there are bouts of frustration. Patience is truly a virtue and if I personally had more of it, I would have become a doctor. Unfortunately, I probably suffered from ADDDD (attention deficit syndrome) with the concentration span of a cockroach when the lights turn on. It was this lack of patience, on my part, that taught me a valuable lesson. The teacher was my 83-year-old Father.
We just see the world differently. I would classify him as a Social Liberal with faith and blind trust in humanity. While he immerses himself by watching CNN most of the day, I notice he always gives the benefit of the doubt. He truly believes that people will always choose to do the right thing, more often than not. We clash often and sometimes stubbornness combined with even more hard-headedness makes all hell break loose. On this particular occasion as I do almost everything asked of me, Papa Joe, frustrated in his disabled state, just blew a gasket. He asked me to leave and never come back.
That evening I spoke to one of my best friends. He reminded me that his father passed away a few years ago and he misses him terribly. After explaining the situation to him and listening to my friend, a light bulb went off in my head. He then said Phil, if I had the chance to speak to my Father for a second I would give up everything just for the chance. He ordered me to call my Dad, apologize and make things right.
It was 10 pm, I called my Father and I apologized for anything that I may have said to offend him. I swallowed any pride I had to let resentment of any kind not disrupt our relationship built over our life span. The next day as I drove him to his medical appointment, he said to me, “Son you had been a little disrespectful toward me”, (I beg to differ but this is where I swallow any pride). He then said, “Always respect your elders”. At that moment I really put those words into perspective, thinking of all the sacrifices he had made in his life for our family’s benefit. To this day, it is those simple words that put life into perspective, keeping me grounded as well as grateful for still having a parent in my life.
I found this clip below very inspiring please watch as it could also bring perspective into your own life.
