President Obama will give his State of the Union Address this evening, an opportunity to launch his re-election ambitions to keep his cushy job. Money is not an issue as the new age media campaign was able to draw blood out of stones. Meanwhile Obama is about to nominate Larry Summers as Head of the World Bank. Mr Summers is a Harvard Professor and Economist yet his appointment may come with criticism as he was responsible for introducing deregulation in the financial sector under the George Bush Sr. Administration. Wall Street seems ready to applaud the decision but the question remains, ‘whose interests will Mr. Summers be overseeing?’
Newt Gringrich is the overwhelming choice in South Carolina, as he took 40% of the vote to easily defeat the rest of the Republican Pack. Mitt Romney will focus on negative ads in Florida, as the backstabbing and mudslinging will continue. In the last Federal election, in Canada, I posed a question to Mr. Ken Dryden, the MP in my Ward. I asked him how sick I was of all the negative campaign ads. He simply looked
at me, nodded his head and simply said, “Philip, they work,”
The EU draws a line in the Greek talks as hope for a solution is still in the cards. A deal with private bondholders is hopeful even though the European partners imposed tougher terms. March 20th is the day Greece will need to come up with $18 billion to cover its’ $130 billion loan. If payment isn’t made then the only thing left is an orderly default and Greece will most probably be kicked out of the EU.
